Pretty Pink Returns to Her Own Deep Woods With 'Backstage'
Arpeggios, pads and a slow climb, out on the imprint she runs herself.
“Good girls go to heaven. Bad girls go backstage,” says Pretty Pink. Her new single takes its name from where the bad girls go.
‘Backstage’ arrived on 23 May through Deep Woods, which she runs herself.
Arpeggios carry it, and they’re hypnotic ones, with percussion kept crisp and pads moving around underneath them while the whole thing takes its time getting anywhere. It’s a slow build. The low end rolls, synths stack up in layers, and vocal cuts come in as it opens out.
She’s pitched the record as a tribute to the dancefloor, and it’s put together to work as one: a melodic run for headphones and a weapon for a room, at the same time.
It also sits inside a bigger picture. Her standing in melodic techno’s been climbing for a while now, and this is the kind of release that shows where she has got to without making a announcement of it.
Save it for the back half of a set. The climb needs a room that’s already warm, and the payoff lands late.
