Argy and Goom Gum finally get in a room together
Pantheon is the first thing the three of them have made, and it opens Argy's New World on Afterlife.
Argy arrived on Afterlife a year ago and he’s been building toward something larger ever since.
‘New World’ is that something. Fourteen tracks on the label Tale Of Us run, and ‘Pantheon’ is the cut it sent out first, on 13 January.
What’s new here is the company. Argy and Goom Gum had never made a record together until now, and what three producers do when none of them has to carry the whole thing alone turns out to be the point of the track.
The bassline gallops. A chorus of voices sits over the top of it, the melody pushes harder than it strictly needs to, and the breakdown is engineered for the exact moment a room stops pretending it’s too cool to react to anything.
What it isn’t is subtle, and nobody involved was aiming for subtle. There’re records on Afterlife that are built to be admired from a distance, and this one’s after your hands in the air before the first minute is out.
