CamelPhat, Yannis & Foals shares 'Hypercolour'

CamelPhat’s latest is ‘Hypercolour’, a dark collaboration with Foals frontman Yannis that lands huge. That’s the payoff of a wish they’d carried for years, because the duo had long wanted Foals on a record. The single arrives as a dreamy, polished take on their familiar hypnotic mode, from a tech-house pair working at the top of the game.

Deep brooding chords drive the track, which Yannis doesn’t try to brighten. The mood never lifts. His voice sits in a melancholic register that keeps the whole thing shadowed even though the title and the artwork both point toward something brighter, while the build underneath stays ominous throughout.

They’ve moved from ‘Cola’, a 2017 Grammy nominee, through ‘Breathe’, the Au/Ra collaboration ‘Panic Room’, ‘Rabbit Hole’ and a Jake Bugg pairing on ‘Be Someone’. That run is why Coachella, Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds and Creamfields still treat them as festival-circuit mainstays. Last year brought the Best Band BRIT, after which the NME Awards and the Q Awards recognised them too, capping a run of recognition that had been building for some time. There’s a Wednesday residency at Ushuaia this summer.
