Adriatique and WhoMadeWho share 'Miracle' on Rose Avenue

They have been circling each other through remixes for years. This is the first record they properly made together.

A remix is how two acts find out whether they actually get on. Adriatique and WhoMadeWho have been doing that for a while now. The first thing they’ve properly made together is ‘Miracle’, out on Rose Avenue on 1 September.

The route here ran through other people’s songs. Last year WhoMadeWho handed ‘Silence & Secrets’ to Adriatique to remix, and in the same stretch Adriatique made their own Rose Avenue debut by reworking RÜFÜS DU SOL’s ‘On My Knees’. Two acts circling the same label, taking turns on each other’s material, and it still took until now to get them together on something original. Adrian Shala and Adrian Schweizer have been candid about why. The project excited them straight away, they say, and then it took a long time to turn into what it eventually became. They reach for the line about good things coming to those who wait, and note that it’s usually the wrong one to apply to making a record. On ‘Miracle’ it held.

It’s euphoric without appearing to try. Basslines that swell and keep swelling. Synths rising underneath them, and a vocal on top that comes close to angelic. WhoMadeWho sings about a miracle and about never dying, which lands as romantic or as something a good deal darker depending entirely on the hour you happen to hear it. Adriatique’s dancefloor instincts and WhoMadeWho’s ear for a tune overlap somewhere between club music and pop songwriting, and ‘Miracle’ plants itself squarely in the middle of it. Rose Avenue has not put out anything quite like it.
