Juan Hansen ends an eight-month gap with 'Higher' on Meiosis Records

The two-track EP marks his first outing on the label, closing out a quiet stretch since his last release.

Eight months after his last release, Juan Hansen’s back with ‘Higher,’ a two-track EP marking his first outing on Meiosis Records.

Broken, propulsive drums anchor the title track, threaded through with warped, alien-sounding textures and airy vocal samples that drift instead of pushing forward, because nothing here is built to hit hard. Arpeggiated synth patterns run underneath for most of its length, giving it a hazy, disorienting momentum in place of a clean drop. It’s more mood piece than dance-floor cut. It opens the EP on its most patient, unsettled foot.

Away from ‘Higher,’ Hansen keeps busy sharing bills with names like Dixon, Hernan Cattaneo, Patrice Bäumel and Adriatique, alongside live acts including Paul Kalkbrenner and Jan Blomqvist. He’s also running Forma, a side project with Pablo Bursztyn and Rocio Giorgi, on top of his solo work, which doesn’t leave him with much idle time between records.

It follows ‘In My System’ and a remix of ‘Bye Bye.’

The EP’s other half, ‘Irreplaceable,’ runs the closing slot.
